Alive in Wonderland: Driving the Freeways of Los Angeles Vlog #4

August 11, 2008 By: Suzanne Moshenko16 Comments

I had to drive to Los Angeles for a meeting last week. Though I live in Orange County, I’ve spent very little time in LA. I recognize some of the street names that line the 5 Freeway, but only from hearing them on traffic reports or because they are famous–like Hollywood Blvd.

When my meeting was over, I headed back to Orange County and made this video. In it, I give you driving etiquette tips, whine about finding an In-N-Out Burger, and reveal one of my deepest fears.

    LOVE the video!
Just a few things to note:
    – You are SO cute!!
    – I am terrified of city driving.
    – White vans appear to be more dangerous than red ones.
    – I really wanted to hear what you ordered at In-And-Out Burger. We don’t have those here.
    – The thank-you-wave is alive and well in my neck of the woods. Truck drivers even blink their lights to you when you allow them to merge into traffic. It’s just how we roll:) I’m glad you passed that tip along to others who are not as well educated in driving etiquette.

Oh this was wonderful. Especially the ultimate video punchline of you driving all the way back to your ‘safe’ In and Out to get lunch. Too funny………what were you going up to LA for? Next time call me. That is my old hood- and I love to shop and show folks around!

BHE–The #1-Cheeseburger with Large Diet Coke. Too bad you don’t have In-N-Outs where you live. If you ever come here, I will take you to one.
    Nat–Thanks.
WBH-I didn’t add the bits where I almost crashed. It was a bit scary.
Marcy-Yes, let’s go together next time.

Next time you are in LA, there is an In and Out burger on Sunset at Highland off the 101. It’s in Hollywood, not too much gang violence there.
Who is watching the road while you are video taping yourself? Way scarrier than white vans or gangs.

How many times did we get lost on that freeway? Remember to look for the HERBALIFE building to assure yourself that you are indeed going the right direction!

It’s almost worth the cross country trip to have an In-N-Out. I’m so envious.

Hilarious! Perfect timing. Vans are the scariest thing on the road, especially if they have murals on them–shudder–except vloggers. They are super scary.

Your blog never fails to bring a big ole smile to my face!! Awesome post.. Can I sheepishly say that I also love theme living- I find myself enjoying the Hollywood section of DCA more than actually walking the walk of fame with a horrible Lucille Ball wannabe asking if we’d like to take a picture, but I would rather be in the real Paris than eating a salad at Champagne!!

what you’re describing here is, i think, what jean baudrillard called “hyperreality,” although i’m not entirely certain, as baudrillard, like most postmodernists, made little sense. he uses las vegas as a prime example of a hyperreal environment, though, if that tells you anything.
i haven’t been to lucille’s (my brother says it’s awful), but i *have* been to the south and i have to say, i doubt any restaurant in oc can properly reproduce the experience of eating a beef brisket in your car whilst dodging hail stones in the sweltering august heat in small-town louisiana. i mean, c’mon now. i do love me some vanilla coke, though.

Thanks DTM! Yes, Paris would be better, but at least at Champagnes you can get ice in your tea!
Aaron, It sounds like I have once again, not had an original idea. I thought as much.
Lucille’s is awful. Your version of the south does sound tempting, though I think there would be a lot of bugs. I don’t like bugs.

nooooes, that’s not what i meant at all. actually, you distilled what baudrillard couldn’t. he was unnecessarily wordy and pretentious. you hit his nail on the head in a very succinct manner.
and, ugh, you’ve no idea what the bugs down south are like. in houston, the roaches rivaled my cell phone in both girth and bulk– and i have a chubby cell phone. still, though, the spiders there are nothing like the beats i see on my nightly bike ride here in irvine.

I didn’t think this made you look bad in any way, a little bit of a perfectionist maybe, a little bit spoiled, but not BAD. I liked the part about not being able to eat at Rain Forest…me neither, that place is like the antithesis of the atmosphere you would want to eat. I do also enjoy a vanilla coke at Ruby’s.

I like to think that my backyard is the South of France. My neighbors think I am off my rocker. At least now I know I won’t be alone. I will be surrounded by brilliant people, just like you!

Alive in Wonderland…never been there, but the brochure looks nice

March 27, 2008 By: Suzanne Moshenko2 Comments

AliveMy column, Alive in Wonderland, made its debut today on ocregister.com. The first installment is here: Welcome to my Wonderland. I will post stories about life in Orange County every Monday and Thursday.

Didn’t Lisa Mertins do a bang-up job on the illustration? It’s downright perfect. She is truly talented in so many ways.

I had an Orange County thing happen while buying the new Fortune Mag ( interesting story about Target) today at the gift shop in the Orlando Airport, I had to show the woman behind the counter my California I.D. She smiled big and said, “I love California. I am going to San Jose in two weeks.” I told her (proudly) I’m from Orange County. “Oh, Orange County, it’s beautiful there…I ain’t been there, but it looks nice.”

Hmmm, wonder where she gets her impression? Maybe from this or this? Yes, it is exactly like that living here–the sun, the indie soundtrack playing all the time in the background, the shrieking.

    Suzanne,
You’re a terrific writer, and I hope you continue to encounter strange and inspiring people as you trek through wonderland. Here’s hoping all your dinner parties are weird enough to write about, all your trips to the store make you laugh. Great start today. Keep it up.
