There I am, graduation 8th grade in 1983. I love this picture, braces and all. It brings back that afternoon in June so many years ago with crystal clear glee. It was one of the happiest days of my life. Do you remember that feeling of being completely unfettered and joyful? School was over and I had the new world of High School waiting for me after a summer of going to the beach and hanging out with my friends. I wasn’t clouded by the worries of adulthood, or even the angst of a teenager.
I would give anything to have that feeling just for an hour today, but I think it’s reserved for kids of a certain age, of a certain time.
Judging from the response to my Growing up in the ’70’s column, reminiscing about the past isn’t something only I like to do.
I am working on Monday’s column now about this very subject…
As I walked down the aisle, when the picture was taken “The Best of Times” by Styx…”Our memories of yesterday will last a lifetime…These are the best of times.” Yes, they were.
This is this Thursday’s addition of “Sincerely ‘Fro Me to You” hosted by Kristen at “We are that family.” Thanks Kristen!
I do remember those days! I don’t know if I’d go back. Anxious child. But the unfettered, not responsible feeling would be nice. Just for a day.
Great picture and post! Thanks for sharing.
It was a wonderful time. I walked with George Figardo to “Chariots of Fire”. I beleive that is the summer of “Luke and Laura” from General Hospital and the debut of “MTV”.. or maybe that was the summer before. It was a great time, no worries. Wasn’t that also the year of Moon Unit Zappa and Valley Girl? I beleive that time was when I started to become obsessed with music. Good Times.
Great pic, great memories. Funny, I ran into an old student of mine last week on her last day of 8th grade. She had tears in her eyes as she said, “I’m in high school now…. remember it was just 5 years ago when I was in your class.” It was so cute… she was so dramatic. I chuckled to myself as I drove away, thinking, “honey this isn’t the end, it is just the beginning.” But to her right then, it was the end.
Such cool memories! And it’s a beautiful photo! I was so ready for high school, too.
Hi Suzanne! Great photo! I wished I looked that good in eighth grade! Dixie told me a while back that you are a writer and blog…. I’m finally getting a chance to check it out! I’m inspired and love to get new ideas for writing myself!

You look very pretty and carefree!
hey, you were cute– in a totally ’80s-dork kind of way. 😉
<3, me
*sigh* Those were the days….so carefree, free room and board (sorta. minus the chores), no bills, no kids, no nothing.
I love the hair, the braces, the serpentine necklace and the dress. Beautiful!
well well well – look at you.
you’re brave to put this out there for the whole entire world to see
(really you look cute, big hair and all)
Woo! Let me say I am so pleased that some one besides me posted something OTHER than Father’s Day post stuff. I didn’t post anything about my Hubby, Dad, Or Daddy In Law and BOY did I feel like the black sheep.
So YES! I love your picture and your thoughts on 8th grade graduation and how you felt at that time. I remember some days like that but not near enough. Or maybe I am so old now my memory is not working right!
Be blessed.
Jennifer
You still seem to have that ‘joy’ about you I think…a real love of life. And man you had good hair…serious farrah-flip!
So Sweet! I remember my 8th grade graduation and how excited I was to get to go to the ‘FANCY’ restaurant El Torito! My Dad even let me order a virgin daquri! I felt so grown up, you know at what 13?
I remember that feeling! It was a sweet feeling. I can only guess my children feel that same feeling now as school lets out.
