My Mom, Engelbert Humperdinck and the New York Times

Today is my mom's birthday.

What can I tell you about my mom?  She has always been my biggest supporter, most optimistic beauty adviser, and, lucky for me, an eagle-eyed proofreader.  

It's true what they say about your mom always being your mom, even when you are a mom yourself.  

Anytime I send her an email past, say, 10:30 PM, it always comes back with the time as the subject line.  Like this "Subject: SENT AT 11:30 PM!!!" Her way of telling me I'm up too late.

Then there was THIS HAT that she sent me.

Almost everything I write she tells me I should send it to the New York Times.  "They should print it!" she says and then says she will do it herself if I don't. Which makes me wonder how many submissions the NYT gets each day from supportive, sweet, well-intentioned moms from around the country.   

Happy Birthday, Mom!   I love you.

My mom was a huge Engelbert Humperdinck fan.  I watched a lot of his videos before choosing this one to post.  Listening to it brings me right back to my childhood living room; this song playing on our giant turntable/TV cabinet, shag carpet underneath my feet, and floor to ceiling drapes blocking out the mid-day sun. It's the perfect slice of a very particular piece of the '70s.  
 
My mom dropped Engelbert as her heartthrob the moment he left his wife for another woman. I remember her telling me she thought he was a "family man" and when that notion was obliterated, she no longer felt a thing towards him.  That's my mom.

    Oh, what a lovely thing to read today, Suz! You clearly inherited your good genes from your mom.
    This is extra special to me because today would have been MY mom’s birthday. When I lost her (four years ago now, I can hardly believe it’s that long) I lost my #1 cheerleader. She was the only person in the world who thought that pretty much everything I ever did was exceptional. It gives me great pleasure to see you and your mom together today.
    I still sometimes get the thought, “I have to call Mom and tell her . . .”

    Do you think your mom would consider adopting a 40 year old man? Even if doing so would automatically make her a great grandmother? Run it by her and let me know.
    As for her old heartthrob, I could never get past his last name to even consider the music. It’s a flaw.

    Cheers & best birthday wishes to your Mom! You are very fortunate to have such a loving, patient, and supportive one! Some of us are Daddy’s girls (enough said). In fact when we go home to see Daddy, the home still your Mom’s soup set passed along during her transition. Do you recall?

    Happy Birthday Bonnie….who would have dream when we met to decide if we would send our daughters to London some 20 plus years ago, that was just the beginning of adventures we would have through our girls….hope your day is filled with love and wonderful memories…

    Happy birthday to your mom! My mom, too, was a huge fan of Engelbert. That song also brings many childhood memories to me (despite the fact that I grew up in another country!) LOL.

    That’s SO sweet. I can tell you love your mom and that she’s a wonderful woman. I LOVE THE HAT! (That’s SO my mom, too.) It is amazing how they keep taking care of us even after we have kids, like you said.

    Tell your Mom Happy Birthday.
    The video was great.
    I always think of my childhood when I hear doo-woop songs.
    Sunday night @7pm for 1 hour we had to turn the only TV off so my parent could listen to their doo-woop music. Funny thing is I developed a liking for it.

    OMG –through tears, yet joy, did I read Suz’s blog today. Everyone can see why I am so proud, thankful, etc., etc., for my daughter. Thank you for the well wishes, both from unknown friends and good, long-time friends — it was really special to hear from you!!! I am so-o-o blessed!
    E. Humperdinck “blew it,” I think. What a talent — still beautiful and inspiring music, huh? (Plus, a hunk!!) But who woulda thought “the kids” were listening! Good lesson in there somewhere.

    Belated Birthday greetings! Just fyi: Enge did not leave his wife for another woman! Pat and Enge recently renewed their vows. Pat wrote a wonderful chapter in his book WHAT’S IN A NAME? She has the most interesting viewpoint about all his affairs! The book is a “must read” for all his fans! He is very candid about everthing. Nathalie, a former President of Enges’s LOVE IS ALL FOR ENGE SACRAMENTO FAN CLUB. Still a fervent fan!
